About Red Russian Garlic
Red Russian is a hardneck garlic from the marbled purple stripe family, prized for its bold, mildly spicy flavour that mellows and sweetens when cooked. The bulbs peel easily, hold their shape in the pan, and store well — a long shelf life that carries them from the late-summer harvest through the following spring.
We started with eight seed bulbs in 2022 and we have replanted the best bulbs from each harvest ever since. In 2025, our Red Russian took second place at the Saanich Fair — and, less proudly, was later stolen from the fair grounds.
Grown on the Saanich Peninsula
Valley View Farm is in Saanichton, on the Saanich Peninsula — minutes from Sidney and a short drive from Victoria. We grow our garlic in raised beds topped with 4 inches of compost and blanketed in leaf mulch, with no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Like everything at Valley View Farm, it is grown with a minimum of off-farm inputs.
The bulbs are harvested in July and hung to cure for several weeks before we brush the roots, trim the stalks, and grade every bulb by quality and size.
Buy local
We sell directly to local customers across Greater Victoria and Southern Vancouver Island. Bulbs are cured on the farm and hand-selected when you order — not shipped from distant warehouses.
